The tour focuses on the historic centre and its complex and often contradictory development as the result of a long and turbulent history. The tour presents key geographical, historical and socio-cultural facts needed for a comprehensive understanding of the city’s development, its architecture and urban structure, from antiquity to the present day, focusing on the mid 19th to mid 20th centuries as well as the modernisation process, during which the city underwent fundamental changes from a provincial Ottoman border town into a modern European capital.

Program outline

Topličin and Kosančićev venac The tour starts at the city’s oldest urban ambiences on the slopes of the river Sava, focusing on the Ottoman heritage.

Kralja Petra Street – an architectural mélange of historical epochs Walking through the city’s oldest street, dating from the Roman times, we observe the complex mixture of architecture styles.

Dorćol We visit the Student Square – the former Roman forum and proceed to the slopes of the river Danube, focusing on the 19th century reconstruction of the urban matrix in the spirit of the European academism.

Belgrade´s Rivers  We finish the tour at the confluence of the rivers Sava and Danube where we observe some of the icons of modernism as well as contemporary architecture and industrial heritage (only in the 4 and 8 hour tour).
