It isn’t just the gem of the almost fully preserved historical city centre, that makes Graz so spezial – it is also down to the sucessful combination of old and new (a reason for the EU to award Graz with the title „Cultural capital“ in 2003). Buildings charged with history and contemporary amendments – buildings, that can be read as confident gestures and have been cleverly added to the city-scape, all of the highest quality. This is how this city keeps itself young and lively.

Up to the Schlossberg with a glazed lift. Short general view of the urban development. Back to downtown, crossing the river.

Murinsel Island Vito Acconci – installed in 2003 as a temporary „eye-catcher“

Kunsthaus Gallery Cook and Fournier (2003) – our new landmark

Silver Elephant Residence Domenig & Wallner (2010) – a new attic structure placed on top of a building, streamlined like a sports car.

Nikolai Square Office Building Bramberger & Pucher (2010)

The Joanneum Quarter Nieto Sobejano + eep architects (2012)
– a subterranean museum’s visitor centre, yet flooded with light.

Passing the famous Italian Renaissance Landhaus (1499), until today used as governmental headquarters. Walking through Graz’ most important street to Main Square, one of numerous renewed urban places.

Finally: a coffee-break at the rooftop-terrace of Kastner & Öhler, a traditional department store, 125 years old and always extended. Now younger than ever with its spectacular roofscape by Nieto Sobejano (2010).
