The Aosta Valley, Italy’s smallest and most mountainous region, is marked by a dense concentration of Alpine landscapes dominated by Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, and Monte Rosa. Its rich heritage—from Roman remains to medieval castles and Walser settlements—creates a context where history and environment are tightly connected. This identity has long shaped architectural culture, making the valley ideal for examining ties between modern design, landscape, and tradition. Proximity to Ivrea, center of Adriano Olivetti’s visionary industrial and social experiment, fostered a climate of innovation that influenced the region. Key to this legacy was the 1936–37 regional masterplan developed under Olivetti, which viewed the valley as a unified socio-territorial system and sought to revitalize a marginal mountain area by revealing its latent potential. In the postwar decades, the valley became a laboratory for new ideas on tourism, mobility, and settlement, offering insights into respectful modern Alpine architecture in the region today.
