Located halfway between Budapest and Vienna, Pannonhalma is Hungary's oldest Benedictine monastery, dating back over 1,000 years, and at the same time a place of innovative contemporary architecture.
The town of Pannonhalma itself has only 4,000 inhabitants, but the archabbey and monastery have a large, supra-regional appeal and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
Over the past two decades, outstanding extensions, new buildings and conversions have been added around the Gothic monastery church. In 2003, the minimalist stone winery designed by the Czita architectural studio opened on the slopes of Martin Hill, followed ten years later by the same team’s newly designed visitor entrance to the abbey, a concrete structure that reveals historical layers. In 2014 and 2016, the new sports hall for the grammar school and the concert and event hall, designed by Robert Gutowski, followed.
The monastery church itself was renovated by John Pawson in collaboration with 3h architects and, since 2015, has presented itself as a radical and minimalist reinterpretation of the 1000-year-old sacred architecture.
