“Zurich is built” is the credo of Zurich’s construction director in the 1990s. It was one of the cornerstones for new planning instruments that were exemplary for the whole of Switzerland. Cooperative planning enables Zurich, as the largest Swiss city, to also focus on quality and sustainability in development areas. Non-profit housing construction has a long tradition in Zurich and is currently the most active in Switzerland. The successful concept is based on numerous architectural competitions held by the city, cooperatives and private investors.
