Bratislava: Felicitas Konecny (Thumbnail)
Felicitas Konecny
Bratislava, Vienna

Born in Vienna, she studied architecture in Graz, Naples and Vienna and started to work as a freelancer in architects’ offices. 1997-2012 she curated and organized events on architecture (among others,"Architekturtage Wien-Bratislava"), 2010 she co-edited the guidebook "Architekturplan Wien". Since 2006 she is active as "guiding architect", since 2012 she is a partner and since 2020 the owner of Architectural Tours Vienna, leading a team of freelance "guiding architects".

Felicitas is enthusiastic about the diversity and everyday quality of architecture, also beyond star architecture. With her training as a licensed tour guide, she deepened her expertise on Vienna and, motivated by demand, she is expanding the range of tours with topics such as urban development, housing policy, and sustainable building.

Promoting Bratislava, Vienna's often underestimated twin city, is a long-term project of Architectural Tours Vienna. Felicitas became a true “Bratislover” and built up a passionate team of Slovakian “guiding architects.”

Destination:
Bratislava

After World War II, Bratislava experienced rapid growth, and today it is often the modern skyline rather than the old town that first captures attention. In the 1960s and 1970s, new urban areas emerged on both sides of the Danube, punctuated by monumental modernist icons such as the Slovak National Gallery, the Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising, and the Slovak Radio Building.

Following the economic boom after Slovakia joined the EU, a wave of impressive projects by Slovak and international architects reshaped the city’s skyline, particularly along the Danube waterfront. At the same time, smaller-scale architectural interventions have enriched the urban fabric, creating meaningful links between the historic core and the city’s dynamic modern developments.

In recent years, Bratislava’s mayor – an architect by profession – has directed the city to increase funding of public spaces and ambitious new architectural projects.
