Tour in Lisbon:
Cascais

Cascais, west of Lisbon, brings together its early life as a fishing community, its role in coastal defence until the 19th century, and its later use as a seaside retreat for the city’s bourgeoisie and aristocracy. Its identity draws on the Atlantic coastline and on a built heritage that ranges from military structures to summer houses and contemporary works.

This architectural tour makes it possible to experience how architects reinterpret that heritage by giving new functions to old forts, whether as a lighthouse-museum, a car park or a hotel integrated into the cultural setting of the Quarter Museum. The tour also explores how a new volume was designed beside a 19th-century neoclassical house to accommodate the municipal archive. Even in new architecture, such as Eduardo Souto Moura’s Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, echoes of historical references appear, including more recent and sometimes debated works like Raul Lino’s Casa de Santa Maria.

All within walking distance, carried by the maritime breeze.
