ECB and 'Osthafen' (Eastern harbour): Paul-Martin Lied (Thumbnail)
Paul-Martin Lied
Frankfurt am Main

Even as a child, I was fascinated by building floor plans. Born in Gießen, I studied architecture in the 1980s at the Technical University of Darmstadt. After starting my career in Munich, I worked for 11 years in the Netherlands, among others at Mecanoo and Erick van Egeraat. At the same time, I began architecture guiding there. After returning to my home region, the Rhine-Main area, in 2004, I founded my first tour agency in 2005, marking the beginning of my professional work as an architectural tour guide—a role I continue to pursue with great joy and dedication.

Tour in Frankfurt am Main:
ECB and 'Osthafen' (Eastern harbour)

Industry prohibited – until the mid-19th century, the establishment of smoky and noisy production facilities in Frankfurt was restricted so that people seeking recreation would not be disturbed. The East Harbor and smoke-free electrical industry ensured the city’s connection to industrial development at the beginning of the 20th century. After the war, the area developed into an eldorado for creatives and party-goers. The architecture tour begins at the Großmarkthalle by Martin Elsaesser – a model building of 1920s industrial architecture, which has now become part of the European Central Bank (ECB) headquarters. The route continues through Hafenpark to Hanauer Landstraße, featuring a mix of historic office buildings and modern, architecturally interesting commercial buildings. One example is the redevelopment of the Union Brewery site. The beautiful inner courtyard, surrounded by restaurants, an event hall, and the Romanfabrik, was further enhanced in 2025 with 80 artworks and 120 commemorative plaques – architecture, art, and history that we are happy to explain.
