The EPFL campus has been developed gradually since the late 1960s, and the functional architecture of its early years has slowly given way to bolder and more original designs.

Over the last twenty years, the campus has expanded significantly, becoming an authentic open-air museum where leading architects such as SANAA, Kengo Kuma, and Dominique Perrault share the space with local firms like Group8, Richter Dahl Rocha, and Itten & Brechbühl. More recently, the UNIL campus has seen new developments, including the creation of the Vortex by Dürig Résidence and the expansion of the university library by FHV Architectes.
