Tour in Vorarlberg:
Handcraft Revival

Vorarlberg has a long-standing tradition of handcraft, deeply shaped by the Barockbaumeister—Baroque master builders who created monasteries, churches, and monumental buildings across Europe. Their mastery of woodworking, stucco, and architectural detail set a standard of craftsmanship that still influences the region today.

In recent years, this heritage has experienced a vibrant revival. Local craftspeople combine traditional techniques with contemporary design, producing high-quality, sustainable works in woodworking, metal, and ceramics. Central to this movement is Werkraum Bregenzerwald, which fosters collaboration, education, and innovation among artisans. Through exhibitions, workshops, and design projects, Werkraum links the region’s rich artisanal past with modern creativity, promoting Vorarlberg’s craft nationally and internationally.

By connecting the legacy of the Barockbaumeister with contemporary designers, Vorarlberg has become a hub where tradition and innovation coexist. The region’s handcraft continues to thrive, preserving its cultural heritage while embracing contemporary design approaches.
