Restoration projects in Venice are particularly demanding, especialy when it comes to trying to find a flexible approach that deals with the complexity of the built heritage, its changes and practical adaptations, integrating them with a series of new interventions to create a more coherent whole. Both Ando and Chipperfield took up the challenge. The first one, renovating the Punta della Dogana and creating the Teatrino Grassi. The second one, confronting himself with the history of Venice in its heart St. Mark's square, with the renovation of the Procuratie Vecchie to turn them into the home of an international foundation, the "Human Safety Net" with exhibition rooms, an auditorium, a café and space to work in. The Pritzker Prize was awarded to Tadao Ando in 1995 and to David Chipperfield in 2023.
