Cologne is a city with a clearly definable centre of gravity: the Gothic cathedral. It holds the city together, and every distance is measured in relation to it. From this centre, Cologne's architects rebuilt their city in the 1950s and 1960s with great confidence in God and themselves, creating icons of modernism.
The tradition continues, with many courageous designs and interventions in the urban fabric. Inside and outside the historic centre, buildings have been constructed that are considered exemplary solutions for their respective construction tasks and have in some cases won multiple awards, such as the Altstadt Nord 'educational landscape' by gernot schulz : architektur, Paul Böhm's Central Mosque and the new city archive by Wächter + Wächter.
Cologne's mixture of all possible eras from over two thousand years of history has produced a very diverse cityscape, with many breaks and surprises – but never boring, we promise!
