The state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia is at the forefront of construction and urban development. There are many examples of this. Right next to the main railway station, an unattractive large-scale structure from the late postmodern era is not being demolished, but converted into a new central library. The new underground line will be completed on time, within scope and on budget, and is also a pilot project for collaboration between engineers, architects and artists from the very beginning of the planning stage.
A new block is being built right next to the famous Königsallee, where the ideas of circular construction are being realised. The two contrasting and complementary architectural icons at the Hofgarten, the Dreischeibenhaus and the Schauspielhaus, have been reinterpreted in terms of urban planning through a radical redesign of the traffic routes. In the centre, the qualities of 19th-century Düsseldorf as a garden city are once again apparent.
The so-called Medienhafen, which has been under development since the 1990s, is now home to many other industries, and there are ambitious plans for further expansion that will also change the road system in the harbour.
