The former industrial port in Deutz is currently attracting international attention due to its unique location, the size of the area, the methodology used and the ambition to create an ecologically balanced neighbourhood. The Cobe office has developed the integrated plan for the nearly 40-hectare site. Listed mill buildings, historic cranes and a swing bridge from the early 20th century remain as reminders of the port's past. Open space planning in the flood zone poses particular challenges. The gradual development of the area can be observed with the construction of bridges over the harbour basin, the first parks and parts of the promenade, as well as the buildings for which contracts have been awarded.
Opposite is the Rheinauhafen, whose conversion into a mixed-use area has already been completed. Hadi Teherani's three crane houses now dominate the skyline of the former customs port with its car-free promenade. Looking across, the question arises as to what lessons can be learned from the left bank to the right bank of the Rhine.
