Tour in Barcelona:
Eixample

From Cerdà’s Vision to Modernist Heritage, Superblocks, and Green Axes

This tour explores Barcelona’s Eixample, where 19th-century urban planning and Modernist architecture converge with contemporary approaches to sustainable city design. Ildefons Cerdà’s grid plan established wide streets, chamfered intersections, and a rational layout that structured the district as an extension of the medieval city. The Passeig de Gràcia became the central axis, hosting bourgeois residences and the works of Gaudí, Puig i Cadafalch, and Domènech i Montaner.

The tour also examines current urban strategies, including superblocks, pedestrianized streets, and cycling routes, which prioritize public space and active mobility. Interior gardens, green axes, and sponge city measures improve ecological performance and resilience. Together, historical planning, Modernist heritage, and contemporary interventions show how Eixample continues to function as a livable, socially active, and environmentally sustainable urban district.
