Mélange – Contemporary Architecture in the Historic City Center: Felicitas Konecny (Thumbnail)
Felicitas Konecny
Bratislava, Vienna

Born in Vienna, she studied architecture in Graz, Naples and Vienna and started to work as a freelancer in architects’ offices. 1997-2012 she curated and organized events on architecture (among others,"Architekturtage Wien-Bratislava"), 2010 she co-edited the guidebook "Architekturplan Wien". Since 2006 she is active as "guiding architect", since 2012 she is a partner and since 2020 the owner of Architectural Tours Vienna, leading a team of freelance "guiding architects".

Felicitas is enthusiastic about the diversity and everyday quality of architecture, also beyond star architecture. With her training as a licensed tour guide, she deepened her expertise on Vienna and, motivated by demand, she is expanding the range of tours with topics such as urban development, housing policy, and sustainable building.

Promoting Bratislava, Vienna's often underestimated twin city, is a long-term project of Architectural Tours Vienna. Felicitas became a true “Bratislover” and built up a passionate team of Slovakian “guiding architects.”

Tour in Vienna:
Mélange – Contemporary Architecture in the Historic City Center

This walk crosses the heart of the city, passing through some of its most evocative squares and streets, while focusing on new buildings that demonstrate how Vienna negotiates the tension between preservation and innovation.

Modernism is also present in landmarks of architectural renewal, such as Otto Wagner's Postal Savings Bank and Adolf Loos’s iconic Looshaus on Michaelerplatz. Along the Danube Canal, recent changes and additions to the quay have transformed the waterway into both leisure area and urban living space.

You’ll experience the juxtaposition of historical periods in Vienna: medieval lanes, baroque churches, and modern buildings side by side, from St. Stephen’s Cathedral to David Chipperfield’s department store, from the grand, imperial Ringstrasse to the MuseumsQuartier, where three striking contemporary structures have been inserted into the network of buildings that once served as the emperor’s stables. Today the complex is home to some sixty cultural institutions.

By exploring the city with a guiding architect, you’ll gain insights and perspectives that go well beyond what typical visitors experience.

The tour starts at your hotel or a convenient meeting point, optionally includes a coffee break at St. Stephen’s square, and concludes at the MuseumsQuartier.
