Seestadt Aspern – City within a city: Felicitas Konecny (Thumbnail)
Felicitas Konecny
Bratislava, Vienna

Born in Vienna, she studied architecture in Graz, Naples and Vienna and started to work as a freelancer in architects’ offices. 1997-2012 she curated and organized events on architecture (among others,"Architekturtage Wien-Bratislava"), 2010 she co-edited the guidebook "Architekturplan Wien". Since 2006 she is active as "guiding architect", since 2012 she is a partner and since 2020 the owner of Architectural Tours Vienna, leading a team of freelance "guiding architects".

Felicitas is enthusiastic about the diversity and everyday quality of architecture, also beyond star architecture. With her training as a licensed tour guide, she deepened her expertise on Vienna and, motivated by demand, she is expanding the range of tours with topics such as urban development, housing policy, and sustainable building.

Promoting Bratislava, Vienna's often underestimated twin city, is a long-term project of Architectural Tours Vienna. Felicitas became a true “Bratislover” and built up a passionate team of Slovakian “guiding architects.”

Tour in Vienna:
Seestadt Aspern – City within a city

At 240 hectares, Seestadt Aspern is one of Europe’s largest urban expansion areas, setting new standards in city planning. The vision: to build a “city within a city” with all the qualities we value in (historic) urban centers. The guiding principles are sustainability, public benefit, diversity, participation, and innovation.

Seestadt has rapidly evolved into Vienna’s smartest location. Today, over 12,000 residents occupy more than twenty different housing typologies and approximately 6,000 people work here—in a variety of sectors including production, research, education, and services. This diversity creates a vibrant economic hub where innovation intersects with quality of life.

One of the beacons here is a mixed-use, 24-floor high-rise whose hybrid load-bearing system consists primarily of wood (holz): it is referred to as HoHo Wien. Another noteworthy building complex is named Robin: its state-of-the-art climate control system is an application of the 2226 Principle. By 2035, approximately 25,000 people will live in Seestadt, and about 20,000 will be employed or in training there.

Led by a guiding architect, the tour offers professional expertise and insights into Vienna’s ambitious planning and housing strategies and shows the most inspiring architecture. The tour starts at your hotel or right at the Seestadt metro station and optionally includes a break at a café or bakery.
