Tour in Barcelona:
Montjuïc and the Seafront

Urban Renewal Through International Events

This tour explores Barcelona’s Montjuïc and seafront, two areas where major international events have driven urban renewal and architectural transformation. On Montjuïc, the sites of the 1929 International Exhibition and the 1992 Olympic Games illustrate how these milestones shaped the city’s modernization. Highlights include the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion and an exceptional range of architectural styles, alongside current projects preparing for the 2029 centenary.

The tour continues along the seafront, historically separated from the city by industrial infrastructure. The 1992 Olympics opened Barcelona to the Mediterranean with the Olympic Village, new harbour areas, and a continuous promenade that created nearly five kilometres of urban beaches. The 2024 America’s Cup further revitalised Port Vell and the Olympic Harbour, blending contemporary architecture with maritime heritage and improving public access.

At the eastern end of Avinguda Diagonal, the 2004 Fórum introduced a large public space built over complex infrastructure, linking cultural venues with expansive waterfront areas.
