Tour in Cordoba:
The Mosque–Cathedral: Context and Construction

This visit offers an in-depth and detailed look at one of the world’s most iconic buildings — and one of our favourites to guide.

We begin with an introduction to the city’s urban evolution before entering the historical context of the Mosque, exploring the mystery of its origins, influenced both by Roman culture and the architectural traditions of the East. We analyse its ingenious system of columns and arches, the fundamental module underlying all later extensions.

We also observe how, from its foundation in the 8th century to subsequent additions and reforms, each phase of construction represents an intellectual and artistic reinterpretation of the preceding one — a principle that even shapes the most recent conservation projects. A fascinating monument in continuous use and evolution for more than twelve centuries.
